Armed with a brush made from his own hair, he paints his unique narrative on unfamiliar streets, crafting a new life for himself

Naoyuki Soyama, born in Niigata, Japan, started as an ordinary young man leading a typical life. Like most, he graduated from high school and entered the workforce, seemingly destined for an unremarkable journey through life. However, a significant turning point occurred at the age of 18 when he faced a serious illness, altering the course of his existence. At 33 years old, Naoyuki Soyama has transformed into a renowned street calligraphy artist, traveling to over a dozen countries, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United States, and various European nations. Armed with a brush made from his own hair, he paints his unique narrative on unfamiliar streets, crafting a new life for himself.

Known by the artistic name ”Enpitsu Shoka“ (縁筆書家), Naoyuki Soyama explains that he forges connections through writing with a brush, hence the name ”Enpitsu“ (縁筆). Through his calligraphy, he inscribes words about ”connections, love, life, and death,“ intertwining people and bringing ”connections“ to everyone.
